Chapter 14 – Death of Selina

Chrome's Viewpoint

As eager as Zach was to go test his powers further, I demanded that we go visit my husband in the hospital first. Sandra shrank us down to action figure size and stuck us in her inner jacket pockets again. I tried to ignore the fact that the jacket was tight against a giant woman's chest. As much as I liked this strange mutant, I didn’t really have a desire to be pressed up against her.

It took her about ten minutes to get us within sight of the hospital. She held us in her hands a moment while talking to us.

"Listen, Selina - are you sure you want to do this? They know who you are, they'll probably know your husband is in the hospital and have him watched."

"I've got to see him; I'm the one that put him there."

"Fine. Then do it my way. I'll go into the hospital with you two small like this. When I get to his room I'll bring you back to normal size and Gravitix and I will watch from down the hall a ways. If you are attacked, we'll jump in, got it?"

"Why don’t you shrink us and Grav takes us in?."

"I can’t shrink myself. So you good with that plan, Grav? I’ll put on a disguise so they don’t peg me as a mutant, either."

He replied, "Yeah. That'll work."

"What's your last name, Selina?"

"Tiriad. My husband is Sam Tiriad."

"All right."

I gave Sandra the room number that Sam was in. She dressed in a wig, a non-leather jacket, and put on large sunglasses. Then she put us in her jacket, buttoned the front and walked to the hospital. She wasn't challenged getting up to the room.

Finally she unbuttoned her jacket again and brought me out. Seeing things from a miniature perspective was quite interesting. She set me down and the room quickly shrank. I smiled at her. She nodded and walked back out of the room.

My husband, Sam, lay on the bed. Tubes ran in his nose and arm. Bandages were all over him. He almost looked like a mummy.

I walked over and lightly touched his arm. His head shifted and his eyes opened. I smiled at him.

I said, "I'm sorry, baby. I didn't mean to hurt you."

His eyes moved back and forth across my face before he croaked, "You're a monster now. You aren't my wife."

I stepped back in shock. "What? But ... I didn't choose this."

"I don't care. I didn't marry this thing in front of me. Leave me be, I don't want to see you again."

"I ... what do you mean?"

"I'm getting a divorce. I'm not going to live with a metal monster. They didn’t tell me earlier in the week that you’d become … this. Whatever this thing is before me."

I felt my world falling apart. Breathing was hard. He didn't mean that. He can't mean it. He's on drugs.

I said, "You're on painkillers right now. You'll see, once you're better we'll be together again.
